BCLE 2000 is DRI International’s core business continuity course: four days of live, instructor-led training in the Professional Practices for Business Continuity Management, followed by the Qualifying Examination. It is the recognised starting point for DRI certification, and you finish it with the outline of a continuity programme built around your own organisation.

Who the Course Is For

The course suits people who are new to business continuity and want a thorough grounding, and practitioners who want to measure an existing programme against a recognised standard.

Delegates typically work in business continuity, operational resilience, risk management, crisis and incident management, IT disaster recovery or emergency planning.

If you are building a programme for the first time, our business continuity consultants can support the work that follows the course.

Course Outline

Ten lessons, each built around the Professional Practices, most with an exercise that applies the lesson to your own organisation.

  1. 1

    Programme Management

Making the case for a business continuity programme, securing leadership support and funding, and setting up the structure that will run it.

  2. 2

    Risk Assessment

Identifying the threats that could disrupt your organisation, weighing their likelihood and impact, and deciding which controls to strengthen.

  3. 3

    Business Impact Analysis

Ranking your functions and processes by the impact of losing them, setting recovery time objectives and finding the gaps in what you can support today.

  4. 4

    Business Continuity Strategies

Choosing cost-effective ways to close those gaps, and presenting the options, with their costs and trade-offs, for leadership approval.

  5. 5

    Incident Preparedness and Response

Setting out roles, lines of authority and succession for an incident, and coordinating your response with outside organisations.

  6. 6

    Plan Development and Implementation

Writing the Business Continuity Plans your people will use during an incident, with a clear scope, objectives and assumptions.

  7. 7

    Awareness and Training Programmes

Building the awareness and training that lets your people respond calmly and effectively when a plan is activated.

  8. 8

    Exercising, Audit and Maintenance

Designing exercises that test your arrangements, auditing them, and keeping them current as your organisation changes.

  9. 9

    Crisis Communications

Judging whether an event is a crisis, deciding who needs to hear from you, and agreeing the key message and who delivers it.

  10. 10

    Coordination with External Agencies

Agreeing how your response works alongside the emergency services and other public bodies.

How the Course Runs

Each of the four days is a full day of live teaching online, led by an experienced instructor and built around discussion, real incidents and workshop exercises. The exercises build on one another, so by the final day you have outlined a programme for your own organisation.

Training should leave you with the outline of a programme you can use, not just a certificate.

Before the course you will receive joining instructions, the system requirements and access to the official DRI course materials. You will need a computer, both for the sessions and for the examination.

The Qualifying Examination is taken online after the course, at a time that suits you. Those who already hold a DRI credential may be awarded 32 Continuing Education Activity Points (CEAPs) towards recertification.

Certification Routes

Passing the Qualifying Examination is the first step towards a DRI International certification. Certification itself is a separate application to DRI, which assesses your experience against the Professional Practices.

Depending on your experience and role, the course leads towards ABCP (Associate Business Continuity Professional), CBCP (Certified Business Continuity Professional), CFCP (Certified Functional Continuity Professional) or CBCV (Certified Business Continuity Vendor).
